Interviews

  RaidSoft  2004-03-03
This time I decided to interview a not so known player from the lower divisions, to get his views on QW and about playing in NQR. The vote fell on RaidSoft who plays for The Big Losers, the most active clan in division 5.

1. Let's start with the basic things: Name, age, living location and what do you enjoy doing on your spare time besides playing QW?
My name is Christoffer, age 19 and I live in Sweden (G?vle). Well my spare time I either spend studying or at my computer.

2. Tell me a bit about your history in Quake. How and when did you start playing?
Well I started playing QW quite long ago (about two years or something), however I didn't play very active back then. Later I took a break until about one week before this NQR season started...

3. How did you hear about NQR, and what made you guys decide to sign up?
I heard from it by a friend of mine, we signed up to see how much we suck ;)

4. Do you play any other games besides QW?
Sure I do, I play loads of games. However I mainly play the MMORPG game called Dark Age of Camelot.

5. What is the main differences between QW and other FPS games do you think?
QW is more high paced and more about pure "skills" than let's say CS.

6. So tell me a bit about your clan The Big Losers. How and why was it founded and who are the members?
Well it's a clan made up of IRL friends and it was founded just before the season for the pure reason of NQR only.

7. You're the most active clan in div5, having played 15 out of 20 games so far. Are you guys praccing hard and aiming for the higher divs next season? =)
Hehe, well we're praccing as much as we can but we aren't really aiming high.. we're playing to have some fun and to test ourselves.. =) We will just play and see how far we go.

8. What about all the new players entering QW, and what can the community do to get more people coming in?
QW is kind of an "old school" game, but I think to get more players there needs to be some kind of "lower" division tournaments with not as high requirements. Take divison 5 in NQR for example, there are several clans there that are totally owning the other clans, it seems a bit unbalanced. It's kinda hard to keep people playing if they don't stand a chance.

9. How does the future of QW look from your perspective, do you think QW will still be played in like 6 years?
Thats a very hard question. I do belive QW will stay for a long time, it's such a good game and it will not give up that easy! =)

10. Overall, what is your opinion about NQR? Do you like the system, the rules, the maps, and what can be improved?
I like most of it, except that division 5 is a bit unbalanced. Some of the clans are FAR away in skill and that makes it kind of boring from time to time.

11. If you follow the higher divisions, who do you think will win NQR6?
I follow it a bit, mainly because I know some of the people playing in division 1. I have no clue about who's going to win but I'm cheering for The Divines! =)

12. Oki, I think that was it, thanks for your time and good luck with the rest of your games!
Thanks yourself, it was my pleasure!

I think I spoke to RaidSoft a bit about div5 during our game (a2k vs tbl). There's definitely a big gap between the 'clans not good enough for div4' and the completely new clans that have to be put in the lowest division. The top 8 or so clans in div5 are really close though (apart from batida who /are/ in the wrong div :p) so it's not like there's clans in div5 just to newbiebash. But there are a lot of really new clans in div5 this season that would probably have a better time in a division of their own.

good interview. I've said before that I think we need to stop trying to decide what is best for new players, and listen to what they have to say themselves. You will always get some clans in the wrong division, that's unavoidable, but maybe there needs to be a real low skill/experience division. When I look at div5 I see some clans with players who have been playing for a LONG time, like 3 years or more. Even if they kinda suck they still have the experience to crush newbie players.
