Interviews

  fix  2003-11-03
Fix, aka the fix-a-nator, is one of the most respected and well known teamplayers these days. He recently left CMF and went back to his oldschool clan Qandrane. So I decided to interview him and here he gives us his views on the QW scene, what he is up to, and a lot more.

1. So let's start with the most obvious question. Who are you? Real name, age, location, occupation, what do you enjoy doing on your spare time besides playing QW?
Well my name is Ville J?rvinen and I'm 19 yeard old. I live in the center of finland in a little town called Karstula, 400km north from Helsinki.
I finished my school last spring and haven't done anything since then, if you dont count the usual summerjobs etc. Also I'm waiting to join the army in a few months.
And what I do with my sparetime which I got lots of nowadays: the usual shit, hanging around with friends, talking shit, playing floorball, and of course these finnish methods..drinking beer etc.

2. Tell me a bit about your history in Quake. How and when did you start playing?
I started playing QW back in 97-98 vs CTF bots and TF online with 33.6 modem. I played TF until 00 when i started to play some DM with my mates in Qandrane.
And then there was a year break since I moved to the city for studies and didn't have any connection at my first year. Later on I got an apartment with 10mbit cable, so I put all school stuff to the corner and started fragging :) First in Qandrane for some time and after a little time this guy named fifi, who I had known for some time from TF since we played in the same clan, asked me to join CMF and so I did.

3. You recently left CMF and joined up with clan Qandrane instead, how come?
Well it was in the middle of summer or so and I were having a few beers etc with pricq and rage who live in same town here. It was just an idea, and after some drinking the idea just became reality and here we are :)
Hehe nah seriously, I think there is really a lack of top clans these days. Playing in CMF sure was fun etc. but i just got the feeling that 3-5 tight/interesting games is not enough.
And after we recruited shiva during the summer I just felt like they can manage by themselves, also fifi was back from the army etc. No hard feeling or anything :)
We have had great challenges this season for sure :) And owned hagge muahahaa! My life is now completed!

4. Can you tell me a bit about clan Qandrane, your goals for the upcoming tournaments etc?
Well playing with IRL mates and old TF mates sure is fun. Feels like we got some inside group or something hard to explain :) I'm sure our main goal is to get some games played and have fun, avoid getting assraped maybe :) Though melody doesnt mind that either!

5. You are by many people considered as one of the best teamplayers out there, especially on dm3. What is the secret about your strong teamplay?
Huhu tough one. I have gotten good education from the boys in CMF, playing and watching players like fifi and dare has given me two totaly different images of QW players. There are these defensive CS cunts and these offensive godlike players, as we got in CMF back then. I'm just trying to balance those abilities to my own playing style and the main point might be to kill the enemy players :)
Dunno what might be the to key to good teamplay, maybe just you need to care and put others needs infront of your own sometimes :) You also need to learn to read the game. You need to know what is happening on the map and act like it's needed in each situation.

6. Through the years, are there any games that you've played, that you enjoyed playing extra much or are extra proud of?
Most memorable game might the first big game for me back then in the SD4 playoffs, when we won over Lithium in the semifinals. It went pretty good and we had good spirit @ mm3 :)
Also beating Slackers is always super fun.

7. Do you have any favorite QW clan or player of all time yourself?
Hmm about clan I dont know. Back when I played TF I watched lots of Z/ZR demos, so maybe those two. Also have to mention that FS' games vs them has almost everytime been smooth and whine free.
My favourite player has to be fifi. He has kinda taught me everything I know about 4on4. Also from enemy teams I might mention players like dag, riker, razor, and nabbe have always been a pain in the ass.
And also ]bgsr[Gamer maybe. I like his way to play 4on4. He doesn't to any extra moves, always just what it needs and plays for his team.

8. What hardware setup do you use, mouse/mousepad?
TB 1ghz/256MB/GF4/19" monitor. My mouse is a Logitech MX500 and i have a basic blue cloth mousepad.

9. Are you playing in software or GL and why is that?
I have used GL almost from the very begining. In TF I started to use it just to gain more FPS.

10. What client do you use, and why?
I guess I kinda like to keep my setup up to date, so therefore I use fuhquake-gl.exe. Fuh has done a good work with his client, and I have to say I dont miss anything like server browser etc.

11. Overall, what is your opinion about NQR? Do you like the system, the rules, the maps, etc?
NQR is just fine. NQR team has once again done a great job. Maybe just a little lack of news at the website and I wouldn't mind a wider map pool either. But you just can't get everything, can you?

12. What kind of improvements would you like to see in the future NQR League?
Maybe some highlights to the lower division clans for the end of the season would be good I think.

13. It would be really great to see you and the other finnish players attend to the upcoming QH-LAN. What are the chances that we will see you and your clanmates there?
QH-LAN has always seemed to be the LAN not to miss, but unfortunately I haven't ever managed to go. This year it might be reasonable to go since the army starts 2 weeks after the LAN ends. I also heard that both LA and FS are coming. If only other top clans could attend too, then I'm sure it would be the lan of the QW-history and therefore I would walk there by foot if that is what it takes.

14. Ok, that was pretty much it. Do you have any last words?
bgSR's are going down this season!

15. Thanks for taking your time, and good luck in the future!
